As an African-American pharmacist, lawyer, and ethicist, she has a unique perspective of ethical issues relative to African-American patients within the U.S. healthcare system. She is committed to sharing her expertise with the sickle cell community.
She began her journey of advocating for patients with sickle cell disease through her volunteer work with the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia (SCFG) in 2005. And because of her work with SCFG, she received the Mary H. Hunter Award from the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America for patient advocacy in 2009.
Her life goal is to encourage the development of ethical policies that promote better care for patients with sickle cell disease. Recently, she published a comic book/coloring book series entitled The Crescent City Chronicles. This series is a decision-making, educational resource for children (and adults) with sickle cell disease concerning healthy eating, the importance of immunizations, and good general health practices.
